When you are hungry and you smell something wonderfully tasty your unconscious starts you salivating and motivates you. When you accidentally put your hand on something hot your unconscious immediately jerks your hand away – you don’t have to remember to do it. You just react! Other times the unconscious provides us with a feeling that warns us about some situation. When you get too close to the edge of a cliff for instance, you automatically start to get an uneasy feeling.

Phobias are an unconscious “automatic”, but incorrect, response to something real or imagined in our environment.

Scientists say that only two fears are inborn – fear of falling and fear of loud noises. All the rest are learned!

The unconscious is a great learning machine. As you go through life you have experiences and learn from them. If you have a frightening experience with a dog, it may learn to create those same feelings of fright whenever you see a similar dog (or even think of one). It may, even as the result of one event, become an automatic response. This is called a phobic response. Since the unconscious is responsible for these automatic responses, you may or may not be aware of the original incident – it may be out of your consciousness awareness. Instead all you get to re-experience is the phobia – those feelings of dread, anxiety, fear and panic!
